The Benefits of Weft Hair Extensions

brown hairblond modelblond model

Handtied, Nano, Silk, Micro, machine or Feathered Weft does not refer to method or installation. It describes how the weft is constructed.

Are you overwhelmed by making the right choice for your lifestyle and hair? Many brands promote their unique method – it all goes back to the quality of the hair application knowledge and expertise of the stylist/hairdresser and qualifications.

Factors to Consider When Looking Into Hair Extensions

Are You Tired of Struggling With...

I work with various wefts and origins of hair donors to suit every individual as no head of hair is the same. The end result is to achieve a flawless, natural, confident head of hair which also allows your natural hair to rest, recover and grow.

I pride myself on my knowledge and experience, not just to provide hair or hair extensions, but in helping women with fine, thinning hair to reclaim their confidence by providing personalised solutions. I even help those suffering from medical conditions such as trichotillomania, hormone issues, and various forms of alopecia, working alongside a trichologist to treat the cause of the problem and nurturing your natural hair as a priority.

The following information is to help you understand the product itself and how wefts are constructed and made:

Handtied Weft

“Handtied” refers to the way the hair extensions themselves are made. Handtied wefts are produced by manually tying hair to the extension seam and knotting it in place by hand. This method allows to create a very strong, but much thinner weft in comparison to machine wefts. BUT layering can create bulkiness and, due to the construction, hair return can cause irritation to the scalp and matting if not maintained and cared for correctly.

Nano/Mirco Weft

Nano Wefts are a perfect solution for those with fine hair or if you are working in the hair replacement sector. This is a single-layer weft with an extra-slim top, which makes it extremely small and discreet and allows the application to layer more wefts than any other weft, with minimal bulkiness and weight. This can be cut to the individual’s width or needs with no shedding or need to seal.  The trim of the weft is machine-made and there is no hair return, making the weft comfortable and preventing matting or irritation to the scalp.

Feather Weft

The newest weft to the hair industry and currently limited in the UK. The Feather Weft is a perfect solution to create length, volume and density by only applying one row of weft to a single track. The technique and construction of this weft, depending on width, gives a maximum of 100g in weight, compared to traditional Handtied or Nano/Micro Wefts which average 15 to 20g per weft.

Machine Weft

Victoria Barnsby does not work with or use machine wefts and would like to explain why.

Machine weft extensions are a collection of hair sewn together by a machine. They are thicker and heavier than the above wefts. They have a wider fabric trim at the top. Machine wefts are affordable, durable and can be cut to any length.

These were the first wefts to hit the consumer market several decades ago and are still one of the most common types of hair extensions using the LA Weave method, which uses 60 to 80% of your natural hair, applying a minimum of 3 to 6 rows. All the other wefts with the methods we use use 5 to 10% of your natural hair.

Machine wefts are bulky, often don’t look natural and the edges of the seam may show. Furthermore, the added weight can cause discomfort and long-term damage to hair. For these reasons, machine wefts are not appropriate for fine, thin or delicate hair. The machine weft is also not versatile with hair styling options, especially when wearing hair up, because they are visible, bulky and, depending on rows, too heavy to wear in a ponytail or bun.

2. Hand-Tied Weft
3. Micro Weft

All wefts are applied using silicone-lined nano/micro rings to create protection between the weft and natural hair. This creates the beaded track for wefts to be applied to, which are colour-matched to your natural hair root, providing an invisible and discreet application when the hair is worn up, down or in any chosen style.
